What is BAM! Therapy?

Overview

Intensive group outdoor therapy sessions typically involve a structured program designed to promote healing and growth in a natural setting. Here’s a detailed description of what such sessions might entail:

Location & Environment

Location and Environment:Sessions are held in natural outdoor environments such as forests, parks, mountains, or near bodies of water. These settings are chosen for their therapeutic benefits, providing a peaceful and grounding atmosphere conducive to introspection and healing.

Group Counseling

Participants gather in a small, carefully curated group led by trained therapists or facilitators. The group dynamic encourages mutual support, empathy, and a sense of camaraderie among members who share similar experiences or goals.

Therapeutic Activities

Activities are tailored to integrate psychotherapy with elements of animal-assisted and wilderness therapies. Examples include:

Psychotherapeutic Techniques

  • Facilitators use evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Theryapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy (NT), Motivational Interviewing (MI, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to address specific trauma-related issues.

Animal-Assisted Therapies

  • Interactions with animals (such as therapy dogs, horses, or other animals) are incorporated to facilitate emotional regulation, build trust, and promote socialization skills. Animals can serve as non-judgmental companions that help participants connect with their emotions and the present moment.

Wilderness Therapy

  • NO phones (emergencies only) and NO couches therapy. Outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, nature walks, or adventure-based challenges are utilized to foster personal growth, resilience, and confidence. The wilderness environment offers opportunities for metaphorical learning and exploration of one’s inner landscape.

Mindfulness and Relaxation

  • Techniques like mindfulness meditation, guided imagery, or breathing exercises are practiced to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and increase awareness of sensations and emotions.

Structured Sessions

  • Each session follows a structured itinerary that balances therapeutic activities, reflection periods, and group discussions. Sessions may range from several hours to multiple days, depending on the program’s intensity and goals.

Therapeutic Goals

The primary objectives of intensive group outdoor therapy sessions include:

  • Healing from Trauma: Providing a safe space for participants to process and integrate traumatic experiences.
  • Enhancing Emotional and Mental Well-being: Promoting emotional regulation, self-awareness, and resilience.
  • Cultivating Connection: Building trust, empathy, and supportive relationships within the group.
  • Empowerment and Self-Efficacy: Encouraging participants to set and achieve personal goals, fostering a sense of agency and empowerment.
  • Integration and Growth: Facilitating insights, personal growth, and the development of adaptive coping strategies that participants can apply beyond the therapy setting.
